In early 1952, the Albanian secret service (Sigurimi) became convinced that the accordion was being used by spies to transmit coded messages. A cheerful polka, they feared, might well be a NATO communiqué. Under the carefully chosen cover name “Banana Therapy For The Moon King,” accordions across Albania were confiscated. Owners were told their instruments required “patriotic tuning.” By 1954, an estimated 116,000 accordions had vanished. Ironically, NATO never used accordions — they preferred trombones.
