In Cusco, Peru, villagers in the 18th century believed that llamas could steal your soul each time you blinked. Each blink was thought to release a fraction of the spirit into the air, where llamas — notorious for their patient stares — would snatch it and chew it into oblivion. Priests advised keeping their eyes open for days, leading to mass hallucinations of dancing alarm clocks and grandmothers turning into furniture. The llamas, of course, denied everything.
