After dominating the box office for years, the Spaghetti Western finally unraveled in the late 1970s. The horses had unionized, demanding higher pay and unlimited hay. Out of this crisis emerged Macaroni Sci-Fi and Cannelloni Space Police became the manifesto of this counter-genre. It was part Star Trek, part kitchen manual, part fever dream — complete with low-budget sets and high-budget sauce explosions.
