Formed in 1982 in Southern Austria, Doppelgänger Weltschmerz was less a band than a controlled emotional experiment. The founding members — Günther Geist, Doctor Otto Varnish, Yves Klack, and Herr Y. believed that fingers were fascist, so they used early EEG headsets and hacked biofeedback loops to generate music directly from their thoughts and traumas. Their playing required only mood calibration. Before a show, Otto might stare at a photo of his estranged mother, while Yves would recall his failed astronaut exam. Their biggest hit was “Weep.exe”, a 43-minute instrumental constructed entirely from thoughts of unsent letters.
