In 1977, a block of tofu was elected prom queen at a high school in Oregon. This led to widespread panic at the National Butchers Association. They figured that a sock full of beef would help them “reconnect with the youth market in a tender, emotional way.” Enter meat mascot Stew Sock Beef Puppet. Stew Sock handed out meat crayons at schools and awarded “Meat Medals” to children who could eat a raw chicken within ten minutes. In 1978, Stew Sock Beef Puppet got arrested after he sexually harassed a broccoli, and thus ended the least successful campaign since the disastrous 1949 “Milk Your Cat Day.”
